I began piping at the young age of 11 and was taught by Neil Maclean Hodgson. My instructor who was instumental in starting the Maclean Pipe Band and I was the first member to register with the band. I then carried on my tuiton with J.K. MacAllister for many years. In 1990 we won the Grade 3 World Championship and the following year we traveled to compete at the Santa Rosa Highland Games in California. In 1994 I became Pipe Major and served until 2003 when an amalgamation with the Annan Ex-Service Club Pipe Band formed the Royal Burgh of Annan Pipe Band where I also served as Pipe Major.
